Great list! I can’t emphasize enough the importance of providing clear instructions (#1 pitfall). The reality is that in many cases the client might not be entirely clear on what is it they want to achieve or the steps they need to take. So they leave it up to their VAs. Many VAs have the knowledge and experience to help their clients “fill in the blanks”, but the time and effort spent this way will be reflected on the invoice.

I’d like to add one more to your list – #6 Not realizing that changes and additional requests result in higher costs and delayed delivery.

Simply Exclude looks very interesting. I don’t think that was the one I found, but sure looks like it will fit the bill. Thanks! I did find a code hack to exclude categories and have used that recently.

I also have a fondness for Wordpress plugins. My list is quite large. I’ll have to get Reveal IDs. Looks like it will make finding those little rascals easier. There was a plugin for excluding categories that I found at one time, but can’t locate it again. Any ideas?

I’ll add to your list:
Any of the plugins to push posts through a ping.fm account. I’m a huge ping.fm user and absolutely love these plugins. I’ve used different ones on client sites and all seem to work just fine.

To keep my site clean for the search engines, I like to use the Broken Link Checker.

Widget Logic gives me control over what is displayed in my sidebars for any given page or post.

Excerpt Editor – to help control any duplicate content issues that are common in Wordpress sites.

SEO Friendly Images – because I’m just that lazy

Again, because I’m lazy – automated footer info for both the posts and for the rss feed: DDAddSig and RSSFooter.

WP-Cumulus – the ultra-cool tag cloud

Oh – you are never stuck with anything!! You can separate your hosting from your email with a simple change in your domain’s DNS settings.

Hi Emi – Nothing – I wouldnt change a thing! WP is the best – and most flexible. If you are looking to not have maintenance to worry about, one of the hosted services (such as Blogger or Typepad) would be a better choice. Less flexible and powerful… but less work too. Thanks for commenting!

Great post! I’m split in half about Wordpress, I love it as a blogging tool and I don’t think it can be beat by anyone in that arena – but I agree with you about the design limitations. If you could change absolutely anything about Wordpress to better suit you, what would it be?
