Hi TechSavvy - thanks for the comment! I agree the "dead" term is a bit premature. It all boils down to what works best for the people involved... and their typing speed. ;-)

I don’t get the need to pronounce voicemail dead.

Shouldn’t it be about choice and personal preference and style.

While it may be quicker to read an email than listen to a voicemail, isn’t it quicker to leave a voicemail than type an email?

Use what works for you and accept what works for your colleague.

People just need to use what is available to them in a productive manner. I see pros and cons to both voice and text methods. Personally I prefer text methods but it would be naive to say that voicemail is dead.

I have never done this. I don’t act like a tech snob and exclude people who choose to communicate with me via voicemail just because it doesn’t meet my standards. I’m all about using tools though to make better use of voicemail.

Besides, I sometimes would like to hear a voicemail from a loved one rather than getting an impersonal e-mail or text message.

I wholeheartedly recommend getting the heck away from AOL. I use Google Apps for mail - and love it!!

Thanks so much for the comment! ;-)

I have so been looking for the word to describe this.

Managing the Bacn in my inbox is the one reason I can't stay away from e-mail for too long.

While scanning and deleting Google Alerts, Blog Comment Updates, E-newsletters, etc - I sometimes lose the more an important and urgent e-mails.

I got my first non-school related e-mail address way back in 1995. It was on AOL and the only screen name I could come up with was vingold.

Since then vingold at AOL has been my primary personal e-mail - even though I have a half-dozen other work related e-mail accounts.

It is so attached to me that friends I haven't talked to in over 10 years know they can always look me up there.

But AOL doesn't allow any kind of forwarding and it doesn't have any kind of bulk handling, so I've been thinking of moving away from it.

I need to move away from it, and I'll just explain it to my friends and family that it is because I need to find a better way to manage the bacn.

Thank you!

I'd like to mention to your readers that there is a business side to Facebook, at www.facebook.com/pages. It allows you to create a one-page site for your business. A great way to utilize these pages are to do one for each product or services you offer, instead of lumping them all into one Facebook page. These pages are also indexed by search engines, so populate heavily with keywords and phrases.

Shameless plug coming...
And if you like check out my page on Outlook and SharePoint training at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Outlook-and-SharePoint-Training/10244633652. There's more that I want to tweak on it, but it's up and getting hits.

And since you're going to talk about Squidoo next, take a look at my Squidoo page http://www.squidoo.com/outlookandsharepoint

Hi Mary! Great blog (found it after "shout out" on the IVAA List Serv). It was so nice meeting you at the Summit (I second the kudos to the committee on the wonderful job they did!) Hope to see you soon.

Mary, this is a nice idea for a post. I started with Typepad and ended up with WP which felt like the right fit as soon as I started digging into it. I am cazy about WP now and think I've almost turned into a pusher (of WP, that is).

Nice article. I found your site via Loosely Speaking ( http://blog.looseends.net/ ).

Have you considered Tumblr ( http://tumblr.com ) as a very simple, straight-forward, hosted and free blogging solution? There are plenty of themes and the more savvy tech user can customize the look fairly extensively. There is also another minimalist blogging platform coming to light called Chyrp ( http://chyrp.net ).

I like WordPress, but I've come to love Expression Engine ( http://expressionengine.com ). The learning curve is a little steeper, but its very flexible (more so than WordPress) and can be used for much more than blogs.

I have a blog on Blogger and a blog on Wordpress. Your "pros" & "cons" are as I experienced them too. I think blogging is fun.
For someone new to blogging, you might get hooked on all the cool widgets and plug-ins you can add. In a short time your blog may look cluttered. Blog readers often prefer a clean, simple blog. If you like more widgets or plug-ins than your blog can accommodate, consider rotating them.
A popular social media blogger's blog site crashed. He thought it had something to do with his blog hosting site. He went so far as to move his blog to another hosting site only to find out it was a plug in he had installed.
Keep it simple. Follow Mary's advice. You will have a good time blogging.

Thanks for the kind words, Mary! And thanks for picking up on our Attendee Referral capabilities. What this means is an event holder can use our platform to create their own affiliate program. Suppose you want to utilize your extensive network of contacts as a distribution channel for your event. In just a few keystrokes, you can create your very own affiliate program, offer your affiliates whatever share of your ticket revenues or fixed fee you choose, and instantly transform the people you know into something rather special -- the personal affiliate program.

We think that's really rather cool.

Along the same lines there's been a lot of hype this week in San Diego about a new event ticketing service called TicketDerby.com. It seems pretty good. The best part is that the service is free for event organizers. I'd like to learn more about the event services out there.

I think your own hosting service more good than wordpress free blogs. Because you can install themes plugins ect at your own host. But in free blog in my opinion you cant install new themes.
Thanks for the article.
