If the company buys it's own domain and hosting, always make sure the technical contact on the hosting and domain is set to your Web Designer or Programmer/Web Professional. Whichever you have doing the work. I have also seen where a client loses a domain name because they don't pay close attention to expiration notices and the like. A true web professional would be able to bring that to the table as an important manner and save the company from disaster. Also, some companies don't want to fool with the technical details of it all. They just want a clean functioning site. And yes, I too have seen bad freelancers/web designers hold businesses captive by owning the domain name. Those guys/gals make a bad name for freelancers like myself. I ensure all my clients own their own domain/hosting. It's just the right way to do business.

It is surprising when companies do not control their own domain. I started working with one person as a freelance web designer, and she had a friend of the family originally purchase and designer her site, and he was charging her $15 a month for hosting + domain registration. It turned out her account was on a server that only charged him $3.99 per month and $7.99 for the domain registration yearly, so she was being scammed. It pays to do the research before entrusting your site to a person or service that will charge you a lot more than you need to pay.
